The bookies were ahead on points going into the final day, but defeats for Limato, Darmouth and William HillThomas Hobson on Day 5 propelled the bookies over the finishing line in the annual battle between the bookies and the punters.
“We haven’t had a good Royal Ascot for the last few years and the signs looked ominous for the bookies after Day 1, said William Hill spokesman Tony Kenny,
“However, we gradually clawed our way back in front and by the end of the final day we were a couple of lengths clear of the punters.”
“You could say it was an Annus Mirabilis for the bookies at the Royal meeting.”
